The government says that Poland, which supports Ukraine in its defense against Russia's aggression, is being targeted by hostile actions from Russia and Belarus. They include cyberattacks, attempted arson and migrants being pushed illegally across the border. The government has planned a range of security measures in cyberspace as well as some $2.5 billion investment into eastern border security. The defense minister and the armed forces chief of staff are presenting the details of the border protection enhancement Monday. They include modern blockades, fortifications and surveillance that are meant to deter any potential aggressor.

Lithuanian PresidentGitanas Nausėdahas secured a second five-year term as Lithuanian president in a landslide victory over Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė. Preliminary figures showed that Nausėda won 74.5% of the votes and Šimonytė 24.1%. Nauseda is a moderate conservative and has been a strong backer of Ukraine, a position shared across most of the political spectrum. During his time in office, Lithuania has also given refuge to many who have fled anauthoritarian crackdown in neighboring Belarusand increasedrepression in Russia. Former Fidesz party member, Péter Magyar, has revitalized an inactive party and in only a few weeks, polls show he has garnered around 25% of likely voters for the June elections. Officials in eastern Pakistan say they have arrested dozens of Muslim men and charged them with attacking a Christian father and son on allegations of desecrating pages of Islam’s holy book. Police said Monday. The mob went on a rampage after locals saw burnt pages of the Quran outside the two men’s house and accused the son of being behind it. On Saturday, angry Muslims set the two Christian men’s house and shoemaking factory on fire in the city of Sargodha in Punjab province and beat up the son, according to the police. The two Christian men were in stable condition and at least 33 Mulsim men were arrested following multiple police raids.

The far-right Alternative for Germany made gains but failed to secure outright victories in local elections in an eastern state where the party is strong and its regional leader, one of the party’s best-known figures, was recently convicted of knowingly using a Nazi slogan in a speech. Sunday’s elections at county and mayoral level in Thuringia come ahead of a state election on Sept. 1 in which Alternative for Germany’s local leader, Björn Höcke, plans to run for the governor’s job. Nine AfD candidates either qualified for runoff votes on June 9 or appeared set to, though there was only one county where the far-right party enjoyed a small lead going into the runoff vote for head of the local administration.

A U.S. congressional delegation has met Taiwan’s new leader in a show of support shortly after China held drills around the self-governing island in response to his inauguration speech. Rep. Andy Barr, the co-chair of the Taiwan caucus in Congress, said the United States is fully committed to supporting Taiwan militarily, diplomatically and economically. Taiwan’s new foreign minister, Lin Chia-lung, noted the the recent Chinese drills and called the American delegation’s visit “an important gesture of solidarity” at a critical time. The delegation was led by Rep. Michael McCaul, the chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. who was sanctioned by China last year.

A Thai court has sentenced a lawmaker from a progressive opposition party to two years in prison after finding her guilty of defaming the monarchy in a speech she made during a protest rally three years ago. Charges against Chonthicha Jangrew of the Move Forward Party stemmed from her speech in 2021 that demanded the release of all political prisoners during a rally in front of the same court that delivered Monday’s sentence. She was found guilty for parts of the speech.
