World Health Assembly hopes to reinforce pandemic preparedness after bold treaty project stalls

  • By JAMEY KEATEN - Associated Press

The World Health Organization is beginning its annual meeting with government ministers and other top envoys hoping to reinforce global preparedness for the next pandemic in the devastating wake of COVID-19. But the most ambitious project, to adopt a pandemic “treaty,” has been shelved for now after 2 1/2 years of work failed to produce a draft that countries could unite behind by Friday, as originally hoped. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus insists it’s not a “failure” and the World Health Assembly this week can still plot the way forward.

Hungary's five-time Prime Minister Orbán is facing a new serious contender in upcoming EU elections

  • By JUSTIN SPIKE - Associated Press

A rising political newcomer in Hungary is seeking to capitalize on a scandal that rocked the party of the country's long-serving prime minister, Viktor Orbán, and a slumping economy to challenge the leader in upcoming European Union elections and beyond. Former Fidesz party member, Péter Magyar, has revitalized an inactive party and in only a few weeks, polls show he has garnered around 25% of likely voters for the June elections. Whether he can win remains to be seen as polls also show Orbán's party is still expected to outperform opponents. Magyar says in the upcoming vote is a “prelude” to his planned run in the 2026 Hungarian national elections.

Gains but no triumph for a far-right German party in local elections in an eastern state

The far-right Alternative for Germany made gains but failed to secure outright victories in local elections in an eastern state where the party is strong and its regional leader, one of the party’s best-known figures, was recently convicted of knowingly using a Nazi slogan in a speech. Sunday’s elections at county and mayoral level in Thuringia come ahead of a state election on Sept. 1 in which Alternative for Germany’s local leader, Björn Höcke, plans to run for the governor’s job. Nine AfD candidates either qualified for runoff votes on June 9 or appeared set to, though there was only one county where the far-right party enjoyed a small lead going into the runoff vote for head of the local administration.
