#MARPOL #DOESNT prohibit pumping #engineroom bilges within 12 miles using OWS (15ppm). Why do we still operate OWS outside 12 Nautical Miles?????Understanding UNCLOS and its coastal limits is the key for marine Engineers. However, Marine engineering competency exams including #UKMCA often overlook these crucial topics, including UNCLOS, Marine Insurance, Maitime liabilities etc .....impacting management-level seafarers' knowledge. It's essential to broaden perspectives beyond IMO guidelines as UNCLOS covers areas IMO doesn't address. UNCLOS establishes the 12-nautical-mile territorial sea, emphasizing national sovereignty. Shipping companies align with this by implementing the 12-mile rule in their environmental policies to uphold these rights.

There is no UNCLOS connection to the OWS.There is also no 12 NM limit to the discharge of machinery space bilges. It must be <15 PPM anywhere at sea.

    ⚠ The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has changed its policy regarding enforcement of MARPOL Annex VI, Tier III Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) Limits. ⚠Engines at or above 130 kW installed on recreational vessels above 24 meters in length and less than 500 gt must meet the Tier III performance standards of MARPOL Annex VI, Regulation 13.5.1.2.An exception to this policy is qualifying large recreational vessels constructed from 1 January 2021 through 31 December 2023. These vessels will be permitted to operate engines within the US portion of the North American and US Caribbean Sea NOx Emission Control Areas without future USCG enforcement action even though the engines do not meet the MARPOL Annex VI Regulation 13 Tier III NOx emission standard. Their engines must, however, be certified to US Clean Air Act Tier 3 emission standards and MARPOL Tier II NOx standards.     A crucial announcement concerns the anti-fouling systems. Amendments, as per Resolution MEPC 331 (76), unequivocally state that the application or re-application of anti-fouling systems containing Cybutryne (CAS No. 28159-98-0) has been prohibited on all ships from 1 January 2023.Ships already equipped with such systems on 1 January 2023 must take corrective action—either removing the anti-fouling system or applying a coating that forms a barrier against substance leaching from the underlying non-compliant layer.#verifavia #shipping #shippingnews #shippingindustry #marine #marineindustry #sustainability

As the September 2024 deadline for IMO’s Ballast Water Performance Standard draws closer, shipowners will face a logjam at shipyards in the race to get their ships fitted with BWMS before it is too late. Simultaneously, they will need to select the most suitable system for their ship and train their crews.Some 35,000 internationally trading ships will need to be fitted with new ballast water management systems (BWMS) that will prevent microorganisms from becoming invasive species when they are transported around the globe in ballast water systems and discharged into foreign waters by September 2024, and shipowners should not expect an extension to comply.
