Page Eight THE VIRGINIA GAZETTE Williamsburg Virginia Icebergs In Antarctic Area To Have Impressive Tear flooded set the engine on fire and burned out some wiring Darnage was slight Jayne said Lightfoot Norge Cold weather note: Antarctic icebergs are having an im presive year Mammoth islands of ice Antarctica's largest export will drift in the world's southern most shipping routes in De cember and January the Na tional Geographic Society says Recently the Navy icebreaker spotted a flat topped iceberg estimated to be 208 miles long and 60 miles wide The big gest ever seen it was roughly the size of Massachusetts and Connecticut combined During the 1955 56 phase of Operation Deepfreeze Rear Ad miral Richard Byrd reported that an iceberg 200 miles long and 10 miles wide had broken from the Ross Ice Shelf Prior to the dis covery the greatest iceberg cited in Navy Hydrographic 'Office records was a lOO by biO mile drifter confronted in 1927 by a whaling ship Icebergs rom Arctic rom Greenland meanwhile icebergs of a different type are voyaging southward toward the North Atlantic's crowded ship ping lanes The 400 or so ice masses that survive the 1500 mile journey normally make their appearance in March April May and June Though North Atlantic ice conditions have been relatively light in recent years the greatest danger zone still exists off the Grand Banks in seas where the icebergs They have resisted ex perimental demolitions The invincibility of icebergs led to a fantastic dream in World War II British Canadianand American military planners toyed with the idea of building huge aircraft carriers from blocks of reinforced ice to meet the submarine menace Secret experiments were carried out in Canada before the scheme was abandoned Ice or California More recently an oceanograph er proposed that a multimillion ton iceberg be towed from Ant arctica and anchored off the southern California coast to pro vide fresh water for that thirsty region How are icebergs bom?
